Papua and New Guinea issued its first postage stamps on October 30, 1952.
Australian postage stamps continued to be valid until February 28, 1953.

The following large format, mixed franking, letter deals with 50th birthday wishes for a former PNG missionary. That explains the unusual display of the stamps.

Saturday, February 28, 1953, was the last day on which Australian stamps were valid.
Later usage of Australian stamps in Papua and New Guinea was not allowed.
When recognized, those letters were charged postage due.
