Port Moresby

The Post Office at Port Moresby was opened October 30, 1945. The relief date stamp PMG'S DEPT. C1 was placed into use and remained until November 27, 1945.

Until the release of stamps for Papua and New Guinea on October 30, 1952, three date stamps were in use.

The provisional Australian registration labels are found in use until the end of January 1946.

A whole series of relief date stamps were called upon in this Post Office.

The date stamp POSTAL DEPT. A1 saw only a short period of use from July 12 until early August 1946.

Relief Dater No. 2 was the next date stamp to be brought into use from August 10, 1946 until September 1948.

This date stamp was primarily used as a transit marking on registered mail.

However, one will also find it used on registered mail from Port Moresby.

In the year 1949 one may find the oval rubber date stamp 'MONEY ORDER OFFICE PORT MORESBY'. Only a few letters have been reported with this date stamp.

Another rubber date stamp with the wording "POST OFFICE PORT MORESBY" exists, but only three examples have been reported.

Between 1949 and 1950 a further Relief date stamp came into use – POSTAL DEPT. C3.

This Relief Dater was used in the Finance Ministry from May 1951 until 1956 at the sub-post office in Konedobu.

For the issue of its own PNG stamps on October 30, 1952, the post office at Port Moresby had two additional, slightly different, "town" date stamps, that at first were used for first day cancellations on mail.

A unique situation at Port Moresby post office is the Dead Letter Office. In this department of the Post Office, undeliverable mail is handled and an attempt is made to deliver it to the recipient. The Department has its own rubber stamp in which the date is added by a separate date stamp.
